True health is about more than just food and exercise. It's built on a foundation of good habits and a deep connection to the world around you.
At True North we believe movement and nature are the greatest cures to the ills of childhood. As a Montessori school the children are free to move around the classroom and can choose to work standing, at tables, kneeling tables, or the floor.
The children will be encouraged to take exercise breaks when they feel they need them for self regulation. This may look like bouncing on a rebounder, walking on a walking pad, yoga stretches, and so on.
The children may also choose to work outside if they are properly supervised. Gardening and outdoor work will be a normal part of our curriculum. An hour of uninterrupted outdoor recess will be a part of the daily schedule. We will maintain flexibility to adjust for more time as needed. A healthy body supports a healthy mind.

Nourishing food will be a part of the daily culture at True North. We are committed to proving the children with wholesome snacks, and snacks made from scratch (by the children). Learning to cook and prepare nourishing food is a life skill and it is a perfect way to incorporate part of our practical life curriculum. We are dedicated to providing as much organic and seed oil free snacks as possible.
Nervous system regulation and the development of executive functioning will be explicitly taught to the children, as well as practiced daily by the teachers. The children will witness real time somatic exercises, breathing techniques, and personal care by the teachers as they model self-regulation throughout the day. (Monkey See, Monkey Do). Children will be encouraged to practice these techniques daily to develop life long self-regulation skills.

Aristotle believed we become virtuous by practicing virtuous actions, not by simply possessing virtue. Consistent repetition leads to the formation of habits, which in turn influence our behavior and character. “We are what we repeatedly do”. Personal development will be a foundational focus at True North.
